The Coding of Diagnosis and Procedures Training Workshop is a two-day, classroom-based teaching and training course developed by the International Centre for Casemix and Clinical Coding (ITCC) and United Nations University International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH). Through a combination of lectures, practical exercises and interactive activities, the course aims to introduce participants to basic theoretical knowledge and practical coding skills. The exercises in this course will utilize realtime patient data.

Targeted mainly at clinical coders, medical record officers, doctors, nurses, medical assistants, hospital administrators; the course is designed to familiarize participants to the use of ICD 10 for morbidity and mortality coding, and ICD 9 CM for procedure coding in the context of the Casemix system. This course will cover the newly developed ICD 11 and ICHI which will be used officially in the future.

The modules that will be covered in the course are as below:

  • Clinical coding in Casemix.
  • Introduction to ICD 10 and ICD 11 disease coding.
  • Introduction to ICD 9 CM procedure coding and ICHI Classification
  • Coding rules and guidelines for diagnoses and procedures.
  • Morbidity and mortality coding.
  • Peculiarities with procedure coding in Casemix.

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. understand and describe the role and importance of coded clinical data at local, national and international levels.
  2. understand the basic structure of ICD 10 Diagnoses Codes and ICD 9 CM Procedure Codes.
  3. understand the quality criteria of data, ie. accuracy, consistency, completeness, timeliness.
  4. apply this knowledge consistently and accurately in identifying the correct codes for a range of typical case notes as well as more complex scenarios.
  5. increase self confidence through participation in various interactive reinforcement activities.
  6. code diagnoses using ICD 10 Diagnoses Codes and procedures using ICD 9 CM Procedure Codes.
